Thinking you might have gum disease because your gums are bleeding little bit? You could be right. The only way to know for sure is to make an appointment with a dental professional. If you do happen to have gum disease, then it is definitely better for you to address it in its early stages. The longer you wait, the worse it will get. The first stage of gum disease is called gingivitis, which if not treated, will turn into the second stage of gum disease, periodontitis.
According to the American Dental Association, gum disease is an infection of the tissues that surround and support teeth.
Why do gums bleed? Gums tend to bleed when they have plaque on them because the plaque contains bad bacteria that eats away at healthy gum tissue. This can easily cause the gums to become red and swollen and even bleed when someone brushes or flosses their teeth. If someone finds themselves in this situation and does not seek professional dental treatment as soon as possible, they will likely be later diagnosed with gingivitis.
Three tips to prevent gum disease
The following three tips can be followed by those whose gums are bleeding or who are looking for ways to prevent being diagnosed with gum disease in the first place.
Preventing gum disease tip #1 — brushing teeth using a soft-bristled toothbrush at least two times a day is recommended, as this is the ideal way to remove any food particles, as well as any plaque buildup that can cause gum disease
Preventing gum disease tip #2 — gently flossing teeth using a waxed dental floss is recommended after every meal, as this is the only way to remove any stuck food particles or plaque buildup between the teeth
Preventing gum disease tip #3 — choosing healthy foods to eat is a great way to keep gums healthy and includes foods like apples, celery, cheese and yogurt
Are your gums bleeding?
If your gums are currently bleeding, you may indeed have gum disease. When someone is diagnosed with a gum disease, they are more likely to have problems with their overall health too. This makes it essential for you to seek treatment for your bleeding gums as soon as possible — your oral health and general health both depend on it.
