Hybrid or Traditional Dentures?

Posted on: December 16, 2018

Both types of dentures are used to replace missing teeth, which improves your speech, smile and ability to chew food.

What are traditional dentures?

These are removable dentures that are used when you have lost all or most of your natural teeth. They are false teeth installed on an acrylic base designed to look like your gums. They are usually sealed in place with an adhesive placed on your gums, providing you with a full set of teeth.

One of the biggest advantages of traditional dentures is the fact that they do not require surgery, which is something some people try to avoid. They are also less expensive than hybrid dentures, making them the perfect option if you are on a budget.

The disadvantages of traditional dentures include the fact that the teeth do not look natural, they frequently get dislodged, which affects your speech and ability to chew comfortably, and they can compromise your facial structure because the bones in your jaw are no longer being stimulated.

What are hybrid dentures?

Hybrid dentures are typically used when you still have some natural teeth in your mouth. They are considered a cross between traditional dentures and a fixed bridge.

Titanium posts, which act like tooth roots, are fused into your jawbone, which stimulates the bone and helps maintain your facial structure.

When the bones in your jaw and your gums heal well enough to hold the titanium in place, the denture is fitted into your mouth, held in place by the implants. Since the implants are strategically placed, they will hold the dentures securely so you don’t have to worry about your false teeth moving around or getting loose.

The advantages of hybrid dentures include an improved appearance over traditional dentures because they are usually made from porcelain and look like your natural teeth. Even though they are more expensive than traditional dentures, they are reasonably priced and less expensive than getting full implants.

Maintenance

Traditional dentures are more difficult to maintain because they have to be removed daily to be cleaned using denture creams and cleaning liquids. They also have to be put back in place daily with denture adhesives.

Hybrid dentures are permanent fixtures, so you don’t have to worry about removing them on a daily basis. You can clean them the same way you clean your natural teeth, by brushing with toothpaste and flossing regularly. You also do not have to worry about food particles getting stuck between the base of the dentures and your gums, which can be frustrating for people with traditional dentures.

Conclusion

Even though hybrid dentures have become more popular than traditional dentures, not everybody can get them. People with gum disease and health diseases like diabetes and smokers are not considered ideal candidates for implants because of the risk of infection. If you are thinking about getting dental implants but have health or gum disease, talk to your dentist to find out if you are a good candidate for the procedure.
